6 tips to get visas for Thailand
If you are traveling to Thailand, there are a lot of things to consider beforehand. One of the most important is to get the right travel papers. Once you have decided on Thailand as your destination and picked the right time to go, you have to look at Thailand visas. A visa will permit you to travel to Thailand, but you have to get the right one for your trip. If you try to travel to Thailand without the appropriate visa, you won’t be allowed to enter the country.
1. Visa on Arrival (VOA)
Most travelers will qualify for a visa on arrival. Citizens of the US and most European countries that visit Thailand as a tourist can get this. Instead of applying for a visa beforehand, you receive one on arrival for free. This allows you to stay in Thailand as a tourist for up to 30 days and can be renewed if you cross the border to another country. This is the simplest way to travel to Thailand and the most used visa for US citizens to Thailand.
2. Cost of a Thailand visa
The visa on arrival is free, but the prices for other Thailand visas vary. Tourists that want to stay more than 30 days can apply for a 60-day tourist visa. This costs 40 USD or 200 USD if you want a multiple entry visa. A multiple entry visa for Thailand will allow you to travel to other countries and back.
3. Thailand visa extension
Overstaying your visa is costly and risky. There is a fine of 500 BHT a day that you have to pay before you can leave the country, and you might even face time in jail. Both the visa on arrival and the Thai tourist visa can be extended with another 30 days Thai Immigration Office. An extension cost 1900 BHT. To get a new visa on arrival, you just need to cross the border to another country and return to Thailand.
4. Documents required for a Thailand visa
Officially, you need proof of onward transportation to enter Thailand. But this is rarely actually asked for. You may need to prove sufficient funds to travel in Thailand as well. Otherwise, the only thing you need for a visa on arrival is a passport that is valid for at least six months after your arrival date. Applying for a tourist visa for Thailand can be a lot of work. If you want to work in Thailand, you will need a work visa. Travel for medical purposes also requires a special visa. Find out which travel document you need for your trip and the Thailand visa requirements here.
5. Thailand visa eligibility depending on your country
Whether you need a visa for Thailand depends on your nationality. Citizens of some countries may only be eligible for certain visas, where others don’t need a visa at all. Be sure to check the eligibility for your nationality. Always confirm with your government what you need to travel to a specific country.
6. Health suggestions
Once you have determined the right visa for your travel purposes, it is time to finish the rest of your travel preparations. As Thailand is a developing country in a tropical climate, there are some health issues to consider. Consult your doctor to see if you need any vaccinations or medication.
Always make sure you have travel insurance. You never know what could happened during your trip. Travel insurance not only covers the cost if something goes wrong, they can also help you navigate complicated situations.
